PC-I of Margalla Highway Extension approved by CDA DWP

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) recently approved the PC-I for the Margalla Highway Extension, a project that has been in the works for several years. The Margalla Highway Extension aims to provide a much-needed transportation link between the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, with a particular focus on easing traffic congestion and reducing travel time.

The approved PC-I, which stands for Project Concept and Implementation, outlines the key features and costs of the project. The total estimated cost of the Margalla Highway Extension is approximately PKR 18.7 billion, with funding to be provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the government of Pakistan.

The project will involve the construction of a 16.5-kilometer-long four-lane dual carriageway, which will start from the G.T. Road near Rawalpindi and end at the Margalla Hills near Islamabad. The highway will have three interchanges, including one at the G.T. Road, one at Rawat, and one at the Margalla Hills. The interchanges will provide access to various areas of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, including the Islamabad International Airport.

The Margalla Highway Extension will not only improve transportation links between the twin cities but will also have several other benefits. It will reduce travel time, provide a more comfortable and safer driving experience, and promote economic growth by providing better access to business and commercial areas.

The project will also have a positive impact on the environment. The Margalla Hills are a protected area, and the project has been designed to minimize its impact on the environment. The project includes the construction of two bridges and the improvement of the existing drainage system to ensure that the surrounding ecosystem is not affected.

The approval of the PC-I is a significant milestone for the Margalla Highway Extension project, which has faced several delays over the years. The project was initially approved in 2012 but was delayed due to various reasons, including land acquisition issues and environmental concerns. The approval of the PC-I is a sign that the project is now moving forward and is likely to be completed on time.

In conclusion, the Margalla Highway Extension is a much-needed transportation project that will provide a vital link between the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The approved PC-I outlines the key features and costs of the project, and it is expected to be completed within the next few years. The project will not only improve transportation links but will also have several other benefits, including economic growth, reduced travel time, and a positive impact on the environment.
